Dar Williams
Snapshot - November 2006

Born and raised in the New York suburbs in the seventies, Dar says she grew up on classical, folk-rock and disco music.  Early on, she became interested in stories and the way they were told.  She aspired to be a playwright. But in 1991, she left one medium for another, immersing herself in the Cambridge folk scene of open mics and tip jar gigs.  She started touring in 1994 and has toured prolifically both nationally and internationally ever since. She has released six studio albums, plus Cry, Cry, Cry, a collaboration with Richard Shindell and Lucy Kaplansky, as well as a live album. Selling nearly a million albums to date, she has been named one the few most influential singer-songwriters of her time by Rolling Stone, Spin, and Paste magazines. NPR’s World Café has lauded her “smart and serious songs with her trademark wit,” while TimeOut NY praised her as an artist who “pushes at [folk-genre’s] boundaries, both lyrically and musically.” She has also written two young adult books for Scholastic, Amalee and Lights, Camera, Amalee. She is currently working on other books and songs to record in 2007.
