*Just for fun, here's a little hint for any of you wanting to get into the transcription business: listen closely for finger movements. When I first starting transcribing this song, it was easy to tell that the chords I've indicated with asterisks were (Dm) and (Em) -- that much was certain. So, it would have been easy to just indicate that they're standard position chords, that is, (Dm) = x00231 and (Em) = 022000. But if you listen carefully to what Dar's playing during that sequence at the end of each of the verses, you can hear her fingers squeak as she moves from chord to chord. But moving from (Dm) to (Em) in standard position would never cause a squeak, as the fingers leave the fretboard to make the next chord. Barre chords, however, do regularly squeak when moving from one chord to another, since the hand often stays in the same position and simply moves up and down the fretboard. And since (Dm) and (Em) are the same shape, just one step (two frets) apart, it only made sense that they were being played in their barre positions (although Dar does not pick the high E string). Therefore, i.e., e.g., to wit, so on and so forth, yada yada yada, finger those chords in a (Bm) shape at the 5th
and 7th frets, like this:

Dm: 557765
Em: 779987

. . . but only pluck the middle strings, like this:

Dm: x5776x
Em: x7998x

. . . with the Em9 being played like this: x7997x

Of course, if, like many people, you find barre chords daunting, you can always play the chords in their standard positions, with the Em9 being played 022002. Don't worry, I'll never tell.

Intro: (Am)(Em)(G) . . . (Am)(Em)(G)

(Am)The summer ends and we (Em)wonder where we (G)are
And (Am)there you go my friends with your (Em)boxes in your (G)car
And you (C)both look so young
And last (G)night was hard you said
You (Am)packed up every room
And then you (Em)cried and went to (G)bed
But to(Am)day you closed the door and said
"We (Em) have to get a move on
It's (Fmaj7)just that time of year when we (G)push ourselves a(Em)head
(Am)We push ourselves ahead" (Amsus)(Am)
And it was (Dm*)cloudy in the morning
And it (Em*)rained as you drove away
And the (Dm*)same things looked different
It's the (Em*)end of the summer, it's the (Dm*)end of the summer
When you (Em9*)move to another place

And (Am)I feel like the neighbor's girl who will (Em)never be the (G)same
She (Am)walked alone all spring
She had a (Em)boyfriend when the (G)summer came
And (C)he gave her flowers in a (G)lightning storm
(Am)They disappeared at night in (Em)green fields of (G)silver corn
And (Am)sometime in July she just for(Em)got that he was leaving
So (Fmaj7)when the fields were dying, she (G)held on to his (Em)sleeves
She (Am)held on to his sleeves (Amsus)(Am)
And she (Dm*)doesn't want to let go
'Cause she (Em*)won't know what she's up against
The (Dm*)classrooms and the smart girls
It's the (Em*)end of the summer, it's the (Dm*)end of the summer
When you (Em9*)hang your flowers up to dry

And (Am)I had a dream it blows the (Em)autumn through my (G)head
It (Am)felt like the first day of school
But I was (Em)going to the (G)moon instead
And (C)I walked down the hall
With the (G)notebooks they got for me
My (Am)dad led me through the house
My (Em)mom drank instant (G)coffee
And (Am)I knew that I would crash
But I (Em)didn't want to tell them
There (Fmaj7)are just some moments when your (G)family makes (Em)sense
(Am)They just make sense (Amsus)(Am)
So (Dm*)I raised up my arms and my (Em*)mother put the sweater on
We (Dm*)walked out on the dark and frozen (Em*)grass
The end of the summer
It's the (Dm*)end of the summer
When you (Em9*)send your children to the moon

(Am)The summer ends and we (Em)wonder who we (G)are
And (Am)there you go my friends with your (Em)boxes in your (G)car
And to(C)day I passed the high school, the (G)river, the maple tree
I (Am)passed the farms that made it
Through the (Em)last days of the (G)century
(Am)And I knew that I was (Em)going to learn again
Again, in this (Fmaj7)less hazy light
I saw the (G)fields beyond the (Em)fields, the (Am)fields beyond the fields (Amsus)(Am)
And the (Dm*)colors are much brighter now
It's like they (Em*)really want to tell the truth
We (Dm*)give our testimony to the (Em*)end of the summer
It's the (Dm*)end of the summer, you can (Em9*)spin the light to gold
