MY FRIENDS

This song is basically a series of walkdowns, the (C)(C/B)(Am) - (F)(G) sequence, and the open string walkdown that leads to the last line of each verse. That's what was causing me so much trouble -- trying to figure out whole chords, when actually Dar is playing single notes. Again, as usual, if you listen closely to the CD, you'll see what I mean. And actually, it's pretty easy if you listen to it, since there are no other instruments to get in the way. By the way, it's played in standard tuning with no capo.

(C/B)x20010

(*)4th string played open as a single note
(*1)4th string, 3rd fret played as a single note
(*2)4th string, 2nd fret played as a single note
(F*)In the intro and the walkdown sequence that ends each verse, this is just a quick transition into the (Am)

Intro(C)(C/B)(F*)(Am)(F)(G)

(C)"He's a quiet (C/B)man," (Am)that's all she (F)said(G)
(C)And he's a thoughtful (C/B)man
It's just he (Am)likes to keep his thoughts up in his (F)head(G)
(C)And we finally (C/B)meet, (Am)and she tries to draw him (F)out a bit(G)
(C)She says "He's writing (C/B)something,
Hey now, (Am)why don't you talk a(F)bout (G)it?"
And he (*)doesn't make a (Am)sound
He's just (*)staring at his (Am)coffee
And I (*1)know there's all this (*2)beauty
And this (*)greatness she'll de(G)fend
But I think it's in my (C)friend (C/B)(F*)(Am)(F)(G)

(C)I have a (C/B)friend in a bright and distant town
(Am)She's found a common (F)balance(G)
(C)Where you do your work, and you (C/B)do your love
And they (Am)pay you, and praise your many (F)talents(G)
(C)Well I'm passing (C/B)through, and we know we won't (Am)sleep
She laughs, puts up the (F)tea(G)
(C)She says "You (C/B)know I think you re(Am)member every (F)part of (G)me."
And the (*)water starts to (Am)boil
And (*)if I had a (Am)camera
Showing (*1)all the light we (*2)give
And showing (*)where the light ex(G)tends

I'd give it to my (C)friends (C/B)(F*)(Am)(F)(G)
(C)Sometimes I (C/B)see myself fine, (Am)sometimes I need a (F)witness(G)
(C)And I like the whole (C/B)truth
But there are (Am)nights I only need for(F)giveness(G)
(C)Sometimes they (C/B)say "I don't know who you (Am)are
But let me (F)walk with you some"(G)
And I (C)say "I am a(C/B)lone, that's all
You can't (Am)save me from all the (F)wrong I've (G)done."

But they're (*)waiting just the (Am)same
With their (*)flashlights and their (Am)semaphores
And I'll (*1)act like I have (*2)faith and like that (*)faith never (G)ends
But I really just have (C)friends (C/B)(F*)(Am)(F)(G) -- (C)(F)(C)
